Hlll 66 looking towads trees on Hill 69
This small set of hills (66 & 69) was my father's introduction into combat, beginning on May 12, 1944. They are relatively low hills, but they command the surrounding area and were heavily defended. My father's Company C, 337th Infantry was award the Presidential Unit Citation for their capture and defense of this key point in the Gustav (German) Line. Company C started with 185 men, but only 18 were able to come back from the hill on their own power after this battle. My father was one of the 18, but never wanted to talk about this battle, except to say "the bodies were stacked up like firewood".
